If I Could Hear You Breathe

James Olmos Poetry
Written by James Olmos

I looked at your picture again since we couldn’t talk
It reminded me of a melody that only angels sing
I never knew such comfort

I allowed the beauty of your smile to dance within my heart
It tickled my soul and my fears ebbed to the ground
What is this comfort that I feel?
What is this melody that resonates within?

If I could hear you breathe, feel the warmth of your breath
If I could see you, but from a distance, my heart would be soothed

Do I speak out of place?
Is it wrong to admire deep, deep friendship?
I don’t want to be invaded with these questions
But you have captured me
You have captured me

I touched your lips last night when a dream met my need
You reached up and held my hand as my finger moved from your mouth
Your grip said what your heart could not

If I could hear you breathe, feel the warmth of your breath
If I could see you, but from a distance, my heart would be soothed
